The SAT is made up of three main sections: Math, Reading, and Writing & Language—plus an optional Essay.

SAT Reading

• 52 questions, 65 minutes

• Covers 5 passages from areas like literature, science, and history

• Focuses on main ideas, inference, vocabulary in context, evidence use, and data analysis

SAT Math

• 58 questions, 80 minutes (includes calculator and no-calculator sections)

• Emphasizes Algebra, Advanced Math, Data Analysis, Geometry, and some Trigonometry

• Includes both multiple-choice and grid-in questions

Writing & Language

• 44 questions, 35 minutes

• Includes 4 passages with grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills

• Topics include careers, science, history, and the humanities

Optional SAT Essay

• 50 minutes to analyze a passage and write a structured response

• Scored on reading, analysis, and writing by two independent graders
